Bone Density Scanning (DEXA)

Bone Density Scanning (DEXA) at Piedmont Arthritis

A bone density scan—also called a DEXA scan—is a simple, non-invasive test that measures the strength of your bones. It uses low-dose X-rays to check for signs of bone thinning, helping detect conditions like osteopenia and osteoporosis before a fracture occurs.

Why we offer it

As a rheumatology and osteoporosis clinic, we often care for patients whose conditions or medications affect bone health. Bone density scans allow us to:

Your comfort is top priority.

Many of our patients are referred for a scan due to risk factors like postmenopausal bone loss, a history of fractures, long-term steroid use, or chronic inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

What to expect at your Bone Density Scan (DEXA)

It’s important to us that you feel as comfortable and prepared as possible for your visits. Here’s a step-by-step look at what to expect.

Gather a few things to make the appointment easier and more comfortable:

  • Your insurance card
  • A payment method for your co-pay
  • A list of current medications (no need to bring the bottles!)
  • Avoid Calcium supplements for 24 hours before your scan.

On the day of your appointment, make sure to:

  • Take your regular medications, unless told otherwise
  • Wear comfortable clothing, without metal buttons or zippers
  • Let us know if you have any metal implants

When you arrive, check in at the front desk.

  • You'll be greeted and given a clipboard to fill out a few forms. These include any updates since your last visit.
  • We'll also ask for your insurance cards and co-pay at this time.
  • When you're done with your forms, bring them back to the front desk. We'll call you back when we're ready for you!

The scan is quick—usually 15 minutes or less—and completely painless.

You’ll lie on a padded table while a scanning arm passes over your spine and hips (and sometimes your forearm). It’s important to stay still, but you can breathe normally.

Our trained technologist will be in the room with you throughout the scan.

Peace of Mind, Backed by Data

Bone health doesn’t have to be a mystery. A DEXA scan gives us the data to protect and strengthen your bones—before a fracture sets you back.
