osteoporosis
What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to become thin, brittle, and more likely to break. While bones naturally lose some density as we age, osteoporosis makes them so fragile that even a small bump or everyday movement—like bending over or coughing—can lead to a fracture.
Often called a “silent disease,” osteoporosis develops slowly and without pain. Many people don’t realize they have it until a fracture occurs. That’s why early screening and diagnosis are so important.
At Piedmont Arthritis Clinic, we work closely with patients to identify osteoporosis early, strengthen bone health, and reduce the risk of life-changing fractures. Our goal is to help you stay active, independent, and confident in your everyday movements.
Signs & Symptoms of Osteoporosis
In the early stages, osteoporosis usually has no symptoms at all. But as bones lose strength, a few subtle signs may start to appear:
Body-Related
- Fractures from minor bumps or falls
- Loss of height over time
- Back pain, especially after lifting or twisting
- A stooped or hunched posture (sometimes called a “dowager’s hump”)
- Brittle fingernails or receding gums (less common but possible clues)
IF YOU’VE HAD A FRACTURE OR ARE NOTICING THESE CHANGES, IT MAY BE TIME TO CHECK IN WITH YOUR DOCTOR. WE’RE HERE TO HELP YOU GET ANSWERS AND A PLAN THAT FITS YOUR NEEDS.
How We Diagnose Osteoporosis
Because osteoporosis often develops quietly, we take a thorough and proactive approach to diagnosis.
Here’s what that typically looks like at our clinic:
WE START WITH A FULL CONVERSATION
We’ll talk through your health history, lifestyle, medications, family background, and any recent fractures or symptoms.
WE MEASURE YOUR HEIGHT AND POSTURE
Even a small change in height can signal changes in the spine.
WE PERFORM A BONE DENSITY SCAN (DEXA)
This is a quick, painless in-office scan that helps us measure the strength of your bones—typically your spine and hips, which are the areas most at risk.
BLOODWORK
In some cases, blood work helps us rule out other causes of bone loss or check levels of calcium, vitamin D, and hormones related to bone health.
WE ASSESS YOUR FUTURE FRACTURE RISK
Using tools like FRAX®, we estimate your 10-year risk of a major fracture so we can tailor a treatment plan that fits your level of risk.
Osteoporosis Treatment Options at Piedmont Arthritis
Once we know where things stand, we’ll create a treatment plan just for you. Our approach is designed to both stop bone loss and rebuild bone strength—always with your lifestyle, preferences, and health history in mind.
Your treatment may include:
Medications
There are several treatment options, including oral medications, IV Biologics, and injections. All medications are reviewed together, and several options can be administered right here in our office.
Nutritional Support
Calcium and vitamin D recommendations; Guidance on supplements and diet. We’ll help you understand what your body needs and how to get it.
Lifestyle Recommendations

We’re not just focused on numbers—we’re focused on helping you feel supported and confident in how you care for your bones moving forward.
How to Get Started
We see new patients by referral. If you’re concerned about bone loss, talk with your primary care provider about sending a referral to our office.
Once we receive it, our team will walk you through the next steps and help you feel fully prepared for your visit.
